ABOUT US

Juneau Ice Fields, Mendenhall Glacier, Auke Bay- Fishing and Whale Watching with Forty Ninth Fathom Charters

OUR PLAYGROUND

49th Fathom Charters is located in the beautiful capital city of Juneau, Alaska. No trip to Southeast Alaska would be complete without looking deeper into the natural beauty that surrounds this city, above and below sea level. From the gorgeous glaciers and moutains above, to the majestic whales and feisty fish that swim below, our personal charters are sure to fulfill everyones wish list. Departing out of Auke Bay Harbor, about 15 miles Northwest of downtown Juneau, allows us to get you out on the water quicker. From here we will be journeying through the protected waters of Alaskas well known Inside Passage, which provides some of the worlds greatest sportfishing and whale watching without the uncomfortable swells of the open ocean. This is it, our playground and place where I call home. I would love the opportunity to take you 49 Fathoms deeper, showing you why there is no other place in the world I would rather play.

Captain Shelby on ALASKAN C GAL in Juneau, Alaska

CAPTAIN SHELBY

Captain Shelby, originally from Illinois, grew up fishing the fresh water lakes and rivers of the Midwest with her brother. Upon graduating high school, she moved to California to pursue a bachelor’s degree in film production. She worked for DreamWorks Animation SKG for 4 years in Los Angeles, until mass layoffs occurred in early 2013. After this she wanted a change from the busy city life and made the move to Juneau, Alaska. It was here where she discovered her passion for salt water fishing and the maritime industry. She started out sport fishing with friends on the weekend and was instantly hooked. The following summer she began deck handing on local charter boats, and was eventually granted her Masters Captain’s license. She has worked for several charter companies in and around the Juneau area over the years until starting 49th Fathom Charters in 2017. In her spare time she enjoys commercial hand trolling for salmon and hunting in the fall with her brother. During the winter she likes traveling, spending time with friends/family, and running a local snow plow business Martin Snow Services.

Captain Toni

We are excited to announce Captain Toni "Halibut Queen" will be joining our crew again for the 2024 summer season! Growing up on the water in a small fishing town in SW Washington State, her experience goes back to the early 80’s working on charter boats. She got her first fishing job on a charter boat as a deckhand while still in high school.  She has over 40 years of experience working in the maritime industry, ranging from working on commercial boats in the Bering Sea & Alaska Peninsula to chartering the Oregon Coast to Alaska. After receiving her 100 ton masters license in 1990, she operated a charter boat in Glacier Bay and that’s where she fell in love with SE Alaska. From 1996-2014 and 2021-2023 she owned and operated her own charter fishing and sightseeing business in Juneau and Washington. She has worked with 49th Fathom Charters in various capacities since the business began in 2017, bringing with her a shining light of knowledge and expertise.

Alaskan c gal & alaskan c shel

Both the ALASKAN C GAL (35 ft) and the ALASKAN C SHEL (32 ft) are custom welded aluminum sport fish vessels. The 12 ft and 10 ft beams provide a spacious back deck great for catching fish or whale watching. They are each powered with twin 300hp outboard engines, allowing us to get to our destination quickly.  An additional outside control station, allows the captain to steer from the back deck, keeping a close eye on the action. The heated cabin, full bathroom, cushioned seating, and table will keep you comfortable on the water. Most importantly, both vessels exceed United States Coast Guard safety standards. Navigation equipment includes GPS, radar, depth finder, chart plotter, and two VHF radios. Each boat can take up to 6 fishermen/passengers.
